This coming new year I made a personal resolution to start and finish a series of a particular silver coin. My choices are Franklins, Morgans or Mercury dimes. I am not looking for high grades yet until I complete the series but money is a tiny factor so I will have to start with low grades. I will order the dansco album once I figure out which one I want to do

FYI For Dansco Albums:#7156 Franklin half dollar set is 35 coins #7171 Morgan dollar Date set is 32 coins #7178 & #7179 Morgan dollar Full set is 97 coins, including one ultra rare and extremely expensive coin #7123 Mercury dime set is 77 coins EDIT - You will have to weigh price and difficulty in completing a set. And if you would be okay with possibly not completing a set (ie Morgan full set)

The Franklin set is a fun set and relatively inexpensive to finish, so I think that one would be a good one to start with, then the most difficult in the middle, with the other one last.

Quote: including one ultra rare and extremely expensive coin One? 1889-CC. 1893-S. 1893 and 1894-P will be no slouches, at a substantial premium in circulated grades. 1879, 80 and 85-CC will be deceptively expensive. Morgans hurt once you actually start feeling the pain of collecting them.

Just have to get a Mercury dime Album. And they look better in a Whitman Classic Blue Album. And most are easily available. Only a few are rather on the expensive side but still available.

Another vote for the Mercury set. But if you want to get the most enjoyment from the project, choose whichever coin you like the most. Be aware though that putting together a complete set of Morgans will be costly and take more time to complete.

Though I collect Morgans, I would say the Franklins are your best bet. I started my Morgan collection 4 years ago and I am barely a third of the way there. I have only one of the keys Dave mentioned (1880 CC).
However, should you choose to do the Morgans, be aware you're in for a fun ride, and will have a beautiful set once you complete it.

The Franklin set would be the cheapest to put together. You could find most of the dates needed in a dealer's junk silver bin.

I vote Mercury dimes because those looks beautiful when they are in a album. Ive got the full set of them and I spent about 200 bucks over a 2 year time frame and the only reason why I have 200 dollars in that set is because have some higher graded dimes in there for some years that are special to me (ie birthyears of relatives and such)

How do you only spend $200 on a completed merc set? Did you not collect the keys?

No I was given the keys as a birthday present one year thats why I started to collect mercs so I could finish the set

Thanks all for your opinions. It looks like the Morgans are going to have to wait and maybe VERY slowly purchase the Merc's one by one. But definitely, I will be doing the Franklin's first. I already have about 10 Franklins from junk silver purchases I can use to start the album. I know myself that I will be looking for better samples than very worn Franklins from the start. Something about the shine of a lusterous silver coin.. Thanks all again. John

Franklins are great because they are a little bit removed from public memory, so almost a "classic", the set it fairly short and easy to collect, and they are fairly large silver coins. Who doesn't love large silver coins? :) If you wanted to do the Morgan dollars in a more approachable way, I know I can't afford all the rare ones, so I am doing a date set instead (one per year). There's at least one per year that is affordable. Dansco has an album for that, so you can still fill an album that way: http://www.danscoalbumstore.com/mor...-p-2045.html

Do the Franklins. They are the easiest, cheapest, and there are no show-stopping, highly counterfeited key dates. You get those with the Morgans and the Mercs.

Go for Franklins. I reccomend an uncirculated set, they really aren't that pricey in high grades (except FBLs of course).
