That's the "new" slab from the current company. It's my opinion - based only on what I've seen personally, so take it with a grain of salt - is that only PCGS gets 70's correct with any kind of consistency.

Thanks. Yes, that's the new-new-PCI. All I've ever seen is cert#s from the 2000s up to under 7000. And all with the 2012.02/ prefix.

Not sure what it means :-(

Thanks again. I should have been more diligent but I'm sure I can cancel out the purchase I made without too much hassle.

Does your experience cross multiple denominations, BStrauss3? One would think that prefix should describe the issue, but if it's on multiple denominations I got nuthin'.

There's something vaguely discouraging about that.

Just an FYI: Their older holders had a tendency to tone any blast white coin placed in them. It's not uncommon to see a late 1980s silver eagle labelled "100% White" with a ring of gold tone.

Good idea I think from the ones on ebay it's the gold band holders that seem to tone coins the most. And it looks like a yellow ring that only goes a little way, esp. on the ASEs.

I see the ring around the coin. Will it hurt the value of quarter?

Regardless of whether the new new PCI is trying to resurrect the quality of old, or trying to reclaim the respect of old with new quality standards and conservative grading, they are not there yet. I have seen the new slabs up for auction at online auctions, but have never examined one in hand, so I am not going to make the " blanket statement " that their new grading standards are still inferior to PCGS or NGC. If I was to see a coin slabbed by the new new PCI in hand, I would still buy the coin not the slab.

But I can tell you from the auctions that I have seen, these slabs are still getting no respect from the marketplace. And that is the bottom line. PCGS has a 1987 MS 70 valued at $5000, NGC has theirs valued at $1750. APMEX was reducing inventory on 1987 NGC MS69 ASEs for $31.95 . And THAT is the bottom line.

I sent three coins to them back in the old days and I thought their assessment of grades were spot on.

Quick turnaround too if I remember correctly.
They were based in Georgia if I recall.

Which old days?

(Green/Red/Blue borders) 2001 and earlier?
(Green/Red borders) under Leslie Shade's ownership? September 2001 to March 2002.
(Gold border) After the sale to Beardsley in March of 2002.

That number is supposed to mean something. Otherwise the slab is a toy.
