Hello, I had a question about pricing older commemoratives. Most price guides start at AU condition but what about the ones that circulated? I have two Monroe Doctrines. One certified at EF45 and a raw one that probably is VF or better. A truly ugly coin even if unc. Pocket pieces of this type seem to go for under $20 on ebay. Good buy or not? Thanks

If you haven't already check out NumisMedia's online price guide. It has prices for lower grade classic commems although ebay probably gives a good idea of the market value.

Classic Commemoratives have been out of favor in the numismatic community for what seems like decades and are much lower in price than they once were. In the opinion of some collectors they vastly underappreciated are due for a rebound but you never know, they could continue to decline.

Classic Commems are basically a rarity waiting for a demand. That demand may never arrive; I think it'll take a sizable increase in the total number of collectors to create a market niche.

Commemoratives are gorgeous and highly collectable but most are out of the price range for a lot of collectors. I have a few of the more common commems and the rest are relegated to my ever expanding wishlist. I would love to collect commems I just don't have the dough.

Well put, SsuperDdave. If you buy the classic commems, do it because you like the coins, not because you expect to recoup your money next week. Come to think of it, that is advice that applies to all areas of numismatics.

And that brings up another point. Don't spend all your money on coins. Set a budget and save some money, people! I can't count the number of friends, customers, even other dealers who are constantly robbing Peter to pay Paul. If you have a bit of reserve in your accounts, there will always be nice opportunities to buy coins. If you spend every dime you've got, you won't be in a position to capitalize when a really good buy or that coin you simply must have does come your way, or else you will have to sell Prize B to be able to afford Prize A -- not a great way to build a collection! Sorry if I sound preachy but have learned that lesson the hard way myself.

Happy New Year to all!

Best Regards,

George
