Having made a move back to the Los Angeles Area in 1996 I have recently opened some long packed items. Among these are a "brick" Motorola wireless telephone. In the same box are some 1996 ASE that were included as "bonus" coins added to old AOL coin auction winnings. These were coin auctions on AOL back in the day pre-internet, when some of us bid online with our big "brick" cell phones.

At the time, when silver was $5/oz one of the sellers gave away 1996 ASE to the winning bidders as a free bonus not knowing that it would later be a "key" date.

It turns out I have several of these ASE that the I newly discovered. Those pre ebay days are gone, but packed away stuff in the garage still hold some prizes.

Awesome story. Silver at $5 an ounce. Wow. Did you buy a lot of silver back then? Was this price considered low in 1996?
