I have no interest in buying this coin; only trying to improve my skills at detecting fakes.

The N on the reverse does not look like a shallow N to me. Could it possibly be that it is a shallow N with a strong strike?

It's hard to determine whether it's real or fake because of the poor photograph which is probably what was intended. Who on earth would pay over $1000 for a coin with such a poor photograph?

All diagnostics check out, it looks real. But the "all natural" surfaces that the seller describes have been harshly cleaned/polished. That color is way off.

To clarify, it has the shallow "N", just the angle of the photographs make it tricky to see.

Personally, I don't like this coin, but I agree that this a real 1877 IHC. There are only 2 obverse dies and 1 reverse die for this year. In addition to the shallow N, knowing some of the markers for these 2 die pairs helps in determining whether the coin is real. I believe this is die pair #2. One of the markers is a small die dot just above the ribbon where the hair meets the neck. Also the numbers in the date are spaced further in die pair #2. In die pair #1 the 1 and 8 are just touching.

The photos have had their contrast etc. manipulated and they are too low resolution for me to make a definitive determination. It does have the "shallow N" as others have pointed out, and I concur with beaglebailey that if genuine it's most likely die pair #2.

One thing I don't like is the uneven wear on the obverse denticles (1 to 2 o'clock compared to the rest).

But jeez, you'd think they'd take better pictures with their price point. :-)
