I'm seeing a slightly-circulated Merc with a very unfortunate brushing on the reverse - you can see the lines Northwest-Southeast.

I also see hairlines. Unfortunate. Otherwise, it would be a really nice XF/AU.

When a coin has a significant amount of hazy tarnish it "brushes" very easily, but usually doesn't disrupt the metal underneath. This hazy tarnish is often the result of being stored in a high sulphur content paper envelope. I do also see the scratches.

Being that you have dirt where you would expect to find dirt on a merc I don't believe it was cleaned. Looks like some posted sulphur enevelop not only does it make the hazy toning it is easily scratched when someone handles the coin just a couple of sliding in and out of an envelope with finger pressure can cause this. I know because I've done it myself. But even your rims show some dirt so if cleaned that would most likely be gone. Ef 45 maybe au 50 but scratches would hold it back.

Quote: Yeah I saw those too, what is the brushing lines caused by? Cleaning. Somebody brushed the reverse to try to remove the toning - note the surface difference from the obverse - and ruined the coin doing it.

Quote: Being that you have dirt where you would expect to find dirt on a merc I don't believe it was cleaned. Then you would be wrong. Sorry, but any hairlines should render a coin cleaned, unless it's a market-graded early proof that was lightly wiped, as is often seen on seated and barber proofs.

If I agree with a majority of the members on this thread ifit wasnt for the scratches id say it would be a very high VF or a low AU
