It is from die abraison. The die when is was polished removed part of the field (yes the bays are part of the field) and when it is touches the columns (which are deep into the die) it removes a small area and not it appears as a raised area on coins struck on it. So chalk it up to die polishing.

There are 4 normal hidden columns.
1992-Penny,-Is-It-Column-Doubling-Or?
But sometimes the polishing removes part or most of the normal columns.
