In terms of diameter. Limit the time span between 1792 and today.

Said coin is made of silver.

I was thinking pattern or an issue struck for another country.

1904 Panama 2-1/2 Centesimos, measuring in at 10mm in diameter.

I want one...

yea I want a Panama Pill.

I found this in this article: http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis...icleId=25345

The diminutive 2-1/2 centesimos is the smallest coin ever struck by the U.S. Mint.

Although it DOES weigh a hair more than the trime.

Regular issue: The trime is 14mm, the smallest gold dollar was only 13mm, but I do not remember which span of years it was - there are several differnet diameters for that denomination.

The Gold Dollar, Type 1, Liberty Head at 13mm struck from 1849 to 1854 was the smallest regular issue struck by a U.S. Mint.

As the OP did not limit the answer to coins struck by the US Mint for circulation in the US, the correct answer (as noted by several folks already) is the 1904 Panama 2-1/2 centésimos coin ("Panama Pill"). The US Mint struck multiple denominations for Panama over the years - the 1904 "Pill" at 10mm was the smallest.

Here's mine with a US dime for a quick visual comparison:

Wow, great thread. I had no idea but thought it was the gold dollar for the U.S. Mint and Gold Rubel for world. The gold Rubles were the size of seeds. Thanks for sharing.

Would the Panama 2 1/2 Centesimos minted from 1975 to 1985, also qualify? They are also 10mm in diameter and have the same weight as the 1904 silver version, at 1.25 grams. Most of those were minted at the Franklin Mint in the U.S.

In comparison, this 20 Balboa coin is a monster at over 4 ounces and it's struck till 1979. Also a Franklin Mint (I presume that's US?) Just imagine its worth just 1 or 2 years later when silver peaked.

Wow, that "Panama pill" is crazy small! I definitely didn't know they were minted here.. Now I want one even more! Darn it! Lol

As mentioned above the smallest for circulation in the US was indeed the type 1 gold dollar .. Mite as well throw a pic of one of those up as too ... Why not right? Lol
