As has been posted before(by me) if you are going to go to the trouble of making an Axial lighting rig then don't waste all that time and effort using ordinary glass. You will be disappointed with the results. To get the full benefit of Axial lighting you need to get a specifically made plate beam splitter 50/50 ( reflects 50% and transmits 50%). Modern plate beam splitters for optical systems have one side of the glass coated with the reflective medium, and the other side has an anti reflective coating that prevents unwanted glare/ghosting.
the short story axial lighting with plain glass will be fun building and will give you some moderate improvement. That moderate improvement could be obtained using some of the methods more experienced Forumites have mentioned in this photography section; with out resorting to axial lighting
with a proper 50/50 beam splitter your pictures will see a massive improvement and the set up will be simpler to operate. ( you still get the fun!) the only issue is cost( around US$135.00)
