Judge dismisses criminal charges filed against four who found $60K

Interesting case although I'm not sure if I agree with the judge's reasoning.

Well, given that the last of the bills were from the 80's and the previous owners had been there since the 50's, it is pretty obvious who put it there. I am surprised at the way the case turned out.

The judge just ruled that the criminal charges were inappropriate. They still have to face civil charges from the owner/employer and from the estate of the previous owners. Although I doubt there is any cash left to recover.

The cash belonged to either the estate or to the contractor who bought the house. In neither case did it belong to the four men who found and spent it. The article said that the deed transfer of the house from the estate to the contractor did not specify that the contents were also being transfered so the estate may have a claim to the money but I would think the contractor has the strongest claim.

I wonder if the 60K will even take a bite out of what he is going to owe the IRS after they finish auditing him over what is probably years and years of unpaid employment taxes, fines and penalties for paying his workers " off the books " He probably just should have just kept his mouth shut and let the guys have the money. Lawyers fees $20,000, You know that this is not the first time or just once he has paid employees of the books, back taxes, IRS penalties, civil or criminal fines, $100,000 plus at least.

The idiot opened up a can of worms that is going to cost him $200,000 just trying to recover $60,000
