Coop, I weighed the nickel today. It weighs 4.93 grams. When compared to other nickels (4.92-5.05) this seems to be within specs.

Sounds like a Struck Through Grease error then. Although not major, I would keep it as this is the first I've seen like that one. |

I'm going with hit with a hammer.
You can see flatness on the reverse on the top left of Monticello dome and the bottom left side of the steps.
If it was hammered against an anvil larger than the coin then I would think you the whole reverse would be flat but if it was resting face up on something smaller then a smaller portion of the reverse would be flattened along with the rims.
I will have to see if I can recreate this tomorrow.

The area in the center deeper devices are the only device affected. If it were damaged the rim and the hair would also be affected. The grease prevented the strike on the deeper devices on the face. It wasn't a full fill. Perhaps just a very small amount.
Loco: It was the first example of the Design with the face turned that way with a struck through error I've seen. I had to add it.

Jefferson's face appears to have been abraded. The featureless area appears quite flat and looks to have fine scratches all over it.
Error coin writer and researcher.
