I was at a bank this morning dumping some half dollars. There was a woman with the teller and she had 2 little boys with her. The younger of the 2 (maybe 6 or 7 yo) is holding a roll of cents in his hand and he looks at my bag of halves.

kid: That's a lot of change

me: Yes it is.

kid: How much is it?

me: $1200

kid: I have a roll of pennies.

me: Yup. 50¢

kid: I really wanted a half dollar.

me: I have some half dollars if you want to trade.

The kid comes over and I dig out the nicest bicentennial half I could find in my bag and we trade. He says "thank you" and goes back and shows it to his mother.

Hopefully he's a YN in the making.

I checked the roll and there was nothing special in it so I guess the Karma Gods didn't deem my gesture worthy enough of blessing me with a 1943 copper or a 1970S small date or even a lowly 1954 Wheat cent which is the only non key / semi key date I still need.

On a side note the last time I was at that bank 3 weeks ago and old lady was behind me and saw my bag of halves and said her no deceased husband had some silver dollars. She said he also had an 1863 $20 gold coin in nice shape that was given to him by his grandfather. I told her not to take to take the coins to one of those cash 4 gold places. Not sure why she remembered the exact date of it but when I got home I checked and higher grade 1863 double eagles aren't cheap.

Nice story. I'll bet that kid keeps his half dollar for a long time.

You should have given him two halfs. It would really have made his day.

I wasn't thinking at the time as I had to go to the grocery store and pickup donuts for one of my pickup banks and drop them off, hit up 2 dump banks to get rid of $5K, hit up another pickup bank fora box, stop by my watchmakers to get a watch regulated, all between and it was snowing out so I was a little preoccupied.

Now that I think about it I had some bicentennial Ikes in my coin purse in my jacket pocket I could have given to him. It isn't about the money and I would have happily passed on $2 worth of coins if I had been paying attention.

Nice story Jack - if he becomes a collector, I'm sure that the story of how he got his bicentennial half will be passed along! A small gesture with huge potential upside. A reminder to us all to slow things down; spend a minute or two with a stranger passing on goodwill. Bravo!
