I had this one posted earlier in "guess the grade", but something cought my X10 magnified eye and wanted to see if there were any comments or suggestions as to what was going on with the Shield nickel (red circle is the area of interest).

I know that there are MPD FS-304 & 305 but this one is in a different location. Would this be considered an undesignated MPD (misplaced date/digit) or a Die Chip?

Thank you for your interest!

It looks too "geometric" to be a random chip to me.

I don't know what is going on there, but is that doubled appearance on all Shield 5-cent pieces that I have not noticed, or is it just this variety?

Sorry I can't help identify what it is!

Look at a broader picture - I think that's part of the extensive die cracking visible in the fullface image. It's a common place to see a die break in this series.

Another collector (outside of the forum) mentioned that it "may" be the lower portion of the "1" in the date.

Possible "{S1-4001} {MPD} [Base or flag of a 1 peeks out below the shield, above the ball.]"

The doubling on the date appears to be MD, the doubling around the devices is Longacre doubling. The beveling from the fields of the white stripes to the devices is from incomplete lapping of the die before it was hardened and put into production.

I'm pretty sure the circled item is a start from the reverse.
Result of a die clash.

The doubling I would attribute to the Mint's problems with the hardness of the "new" alloy.

I agree with Conder101 that it's a poorly made die (I am a tool and die maker myself).
