I finally broke down and ordered some more Airtite holders for my silver Eagles as I seemed to have been buying them faster than I was ordering supplies.

I got all of my Silver Eagles out and noticed that they have developed a blue tone to them like come clad coins I have seen. The coins in question are all 2013 and 2014 which I bought all of them from a dealer who is a member of our local coin club and is actually the guy who buys the Monster boxes and distributes them to the other dealers in the area who don't bulk order from the mint so I know the coins are genuine.

The coins were stored in BCW flips which I got them in and then inside of a cardboard box I got with an APMEX order a while back. The other coins in the box which were in Airtites seem unaffected. The 90% silver stored in other brand flips or 2 X 2's in the same safe but not in the box are not affected. My proof Smithsonian commemorative which is in the original government capsule has started to haze and get a nasty red / brown pattern on it which leads me to believe it may be the cardboard APMEX box causing the problems but you would think a company like APMEX who only sells precious metals would use shipping boxes that are safe for precious metals.

I don't know if I should keep a few in the flips and in the box to see how the continue to progress or get them out of there ASAP.

Jack, can you post some pics of the coins? I have two very special ASE's in a flip like that and I want to know if I should remove them or not.

TAKE THEM OUT OF BCW!! They are vinyl PVC. Although they have much less then other flips, they are only intended for short term use. (shipping, cataloging, ect) Either get individual airtight capsules or keep them in rolls.

Not all is lost. Soak the "blue" coins in acetone. Wont harm your coin in anyway. complete undetectable and will remove PVC residue.

Flips, also called soft vinyl flips or PVC flips, are commonly used by dealers to sell coins and by some grading services when people submit coins to them because they make it easy and safe to insert and remove coins from them and because they'reinexpensive. However, regular flips are unsafe for long-term coin storage.

Curiously I have finally arrived at a point where I can see that the temporary use of PVC materials for coin storage may be justified.
I thought I would never write such a thing!

Perhaps they could help provide a first beneficial step to an uncirculated coin acquiring a nice patina.

When satisfied, THEN is the time to put them in airtites.
