I am on vacation right now, and a relative wants to give me a bullion silver eagle for my collection. How can I transport the thing home on a plane safely? Will a plastic bag do? I have no access to my Airtites or 2x2s or anything.
I am afraid of PVC damage or tarnishing.
Leave in 3 hours so please offer any ideas you have. Edited by The Silver Searcher 12/30/2014 4:21 pm

Bubble wrap, a ziplock bag in a box. You can substitute a t-shirt for bubble wrap. Maybe that'll help.

I carried my model Concorde on flights a few times. I wrapped it with a lot of tissue (didn't have bubble wrap), enough to cover it completely on all sides but still leaving some "give" to it, and put it in a box. I don't know if tissue will scratch coins but put the ASE in food grade plastic first (I received some notes in food grade plastic, they were in there for at least 10 years and they were fine), then wrap it in tissue, just to be on the safe side.

For the trip home you could put it in a plastic bag or envelope, wrap it in a sock..it won't be there forever. If it is a bullion ASE I would just put it in my pocket Quote: I am afraid of PVC damage or tarnishing. On the flight?

Any plastic bag is fine for that short a transport. Don't worry about PVC. Rinse it in acetone when you get home if you're worried, but I wouldn't be.

A ziploc bag will do. Food grade plastics do not contain PVC. Then I'd put it in an envelope and stuff the envelope with tissues to absorb impacts. Good luck.

Just put it in a box, and mark " Valuable coin inside, Please handle with care " Then just check it with your luggage, it will be ok.

Ziplock bag inside a sock in with your luggage. The luggage metal detector will find it, but that's OK, not a suspicious item. Just make sure the sock is clean!

Put it in a small baggy then in your wallet.

PVC won't damage a coin for a short duration. I stored a few BU ASE's in ziploc's for around 5 years before I remembered them and transferred them to air tites. No damage.

Most Ziplocs are food-grade and neutral to coins. We recommend them as part of a long-term storage plan.

Good advice Denco. We should try it with 10 packages all containing some odd coins and see how many make it through! Maybe pack a cubic zirconium with them!

It's not like it's a MS-66 St Gaudens or something. Just wrap it in a bag, stuff it in a sock and throw it in your suitcase. It will be fine. It's a nice coin, but it's probably worth less than the pair of pants you'll also be carrying in your suitcase.

The original poster is now obligated to reply with what he actually did and how the coin faired. To do any less risks angering the coin gods; a picture might further appease them.
