Personally I would never do that is check baggage. There is just to much theft from check baggage to put an identifying note as to "valuable coins" on a box of any type.
I'd most likely do what the OP did and stuff it inside of something that was dirty and nasty that the TSA or baggage handlers wouldn't want to touch. Other than that put in in carry on baggage and see if the TSA want to inspect the baggage. If not, then you're home free. If they do, you a there watching them paw through your things.
The most fun that I had (innocently) was to bring back some wax candles wrapped in a paper bag that contained an alarm clock, batteries, and some wire. Boy did they want to talk to me. There was nothing dangerous in the bag but they did want to talk to me. The wax candles were for the wife, the batteries were taken out an AM radio, and the alarm clock is just that. They were not please with me at all.
