What is the meaning of the design in the 1900 and older Newfoundland 50 cent coins?

The design around the outer perimeter on the reverse side. Looks tribal. Perhaps from an Indian tribe or sometimes looks like geese flying.

Thank you Pacificoin. BTW the avatar associated with your name is my all time favorite coin.
I have a 19000 but not in great condition. I would like to get some better ones. Always looking on e bay.
Anywhere else you could recommend.
