Learning more about the varieties of 50 Cent Coins
Here is my second of three coins;
1947 Curved 7, Flat Back 9, could be narrow date, 7/7 (double bar?), far from ring
Obverse - Deep Resurface
Please grade and any comments welcome. Edited by SilverDon 01/07/2015 12:01 pm

Looks like a Die 8 flat back 9, narrow date, in F12

Thanks Shafta9a, Is that Curved 7, Mid Wide Date, No Doubling, as there could be just dirt or debris under the bar of the 7. Having a hard time, took the loupe to the coin, 20X and the doubling is not immediately obvious on the 7, but there is a lot of dirt on the coin and a hint of doubling exists on the bar and the curved part of the 7. See enlarged date as good as I can get it.

I agree, Fine, the reverse probably holds it back from being a higher grade than F12. As I mentioned with my 47 staight, it's hard to confirm doubling or tripling in the 7 with lower grades and this is the case in your curved 7.
On another note, SHAFTA9a, what is the story on your avatar, is it a clip @ 6 o'clock ? Do you have a better picture that you could post ?

@ west-canuk, no clip, just a normal 1948 half.

You mentioned doubling under the bar of the 7. To my knowledge, there are only 3 7/7s for the curved 7 dies... the first is a rotated repunch with doubling to the top right and the bottom left of the 7, the second is doubled to the bottom left of the 7 and the last is to the top right of the 7. Nothing under the bar of the 7.

Maybe I should look closer at my 47`s. I have 6 of them 3 curved and 3 straight 7`s. Any thing else to check for errors on either coins. or where to look for info. Gary

If you have a rotated repunch 7/7, you will see something strange. The last two die digits look freshly punched, but 'CANADA 19xx' is heavily die detiorated ie. the rest of the die looks old, the '47' looks new !
See Charltons 68th (2014) in the Variety section for 50cent info.

I guess I need a new Charlton guide since mine is a 1970 edition and my other Canadian book is a 1958 edition. Not many varieties shown other than 1949 hoof in 9 and 1950 lines through 0.
I have been out of coins since then and retirement gets boring and I'm trying to have a hobby that I like to play with again. I have saved my Canadian coins that I have gotten in that era. And the dealers wouldn't pay anything when I sold my US silver

Quote: ... since mine is a 1970 edition... Aarrg!!... you have to get a newer one, that one is way too old, there is a lot of info that has been upgraded since then.
