This is interesting. The coin today.
http://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dime.../1216-4075.sIn the description they do not mention this one in the ones known to exist.
http://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dime.../1210-4702.sSince it also was Simpson pedigree perhaps it is the same coin, but I can't find any clear diagnostics to tie them together. A nice upgrade from 65 to 66+ CAC in a short time if it is the same coin.
The latter coin was clearly the same coin reholdered from this one.
http://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dime...a/314-6280.sConnecting the dots could make one conclude the one auctioned today (1/7/2015) is the same coin -- this could be verified by checking if 1 or 2 were part of the "Simpson" sale but I don't have access to those auction records. To upgrade from MS-65 to MS-66+ CAC suggests the coin was subject to some "conservation". A sales price of a bit over $38k in 2014 to attempts to get $176,250 seems a bit optimistic, but who knows.
MAJOR UPDATE. Under description of the recent auction are a list of known coins. At the top of the list:
1. SP66+BM NGC. Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2003), lot 6280; Simpson Collection. The present coin.
Hence my speculation is correct. A bit of deception, because what is mentioned above states a grade of SP66+ however the coin was SP65 at the time of the sale. So this IS the same coin. Interesting how the appearance and grade have changed. Including a tell-tale tiny nick on the leg which has miraculously healed itself.
Should HA have posted the grade of the coin when it was previously sold, or is posting the grade as it currently resides yet referencing the previous sales acceptable or a bit sleazy? Interesting what a bit of investigation can reveal. I was previously interested in a purchase of the coin, but not any longer. I've also learned to research HA coins since they seem to be taking a liberal approach to their descriptions.
