The hobby has had dramatic changes since I was active in it several decades ago. I would appreciate some advice from those of you who are knowledgeable on what the informed consensus currently is on the best way to approach the sale of some early commemorative gold

I have 4 PCGS recently slabbed early gold commemoratives.
1904 Lewis and Clark G$1 MS65
1905 Lewis and Clark G$1 MS64
1916 McKinley G$1 MS63
1917 McKinley G$1 MS64

ebay seems an easy way but charges 10%, and auctions probably charge higher commissions.

Is there another reliable and safe way to sell on the internet or directly that I may be missing that will net me a fair price?
Thanks for your help

Your Lewis & Clark PCGS certified examples are somewhat expensive coins in today's commemorative market ...

The 1904 MS65 is an (appx) $5000 coin ... while the 1905 MS64 is an (appx) $2700 coin.

For best visibility to a wide range of collectors I suggest one of the major auction houses ... take your pick.

Heritage and Stacks-Bowers come to mind ... that is where I would place them if they were my coins for sale.

Hi,
I'm new here but want to try and help.
A good starting point is to determine what you want each to sell for. It's best to look at Heritage, NGC and PCGS Prices Realized for each coin to determine current value.
I would list them here under the appropriate topic and also join the NGC (my favorite) or PCGS Coin Forums. On those sites you can list theses coins in the Buy/Sell/Trade forums. They are free listings where Auction Houses will possibly cost you money.

Hope this was helpful,

Lee

I have an older GreySheet here (Nov 2014), the 1904 L&C MS65 was bid 5,550 ask 6,050... the 1905 MS64 was 2,700/2,900. The cover note mentions your coin, "The rather scarce 1904 Lewis & Clark Expo Gold Dollars in MS66 suffered in a recent auction appearance".

If you are going to do a private sale, you will need to carefully check references. The various forums have BST (Buy/Sell/Trade) subforums, but you also need to have a certain number of posts to post there, be a member for a certain minimum time, etc. - all designed to protect from the pop-up, dump and flee crowd (just pointing out the difficulties in that path for new members, very definitely no aspersions on yourself meant - more "welcome to the family, hope you hang out here and get interested in the hobby again")

Every other path for selling your coins involves fees (sometimes visible and sometimes not, but fees never-the-less). Auction houses charge fees to buyers and sellers. ebay you know about (charges the seller).

You can also visit one of the regional coin shows and offer them to several dealers taking the best price(s) offered. http://www.michigancoinclub.org/shows.html - depending on what you consider your local radius and how urgent the sale is, there are several candidates. I'd stay way from the 20 table local show, IMHO.

But remember, if you sell to a dealer they will offer you something less than GreySheet bid hoping to sell for GreySheet ask to make $ to pay the rent and put food on the table. And since everybody knows about the GreySheet, customers at the shows expect to pay bid, so the dealers are now offering 10% or 20% "back of bid".

I'd use GreatCollections before running them on ebay. Far less hassle.
