Well, with the Presidential Brass Ike dollar coming out this year, I figured I would put together a mini-collection centered around an Eisenhower theme. When you think about it, Ike is on a surprisingly large number of coins directly and indirectly. In fact, I cannot think of a 20th century American who has been on more than he.

Here's what I am thinking of putting together:

1. An Ike from 71-78, OBVIOUSLY
2. A Bicentennial Ike
3. Silver-clad versions of 1 and 2, maybe
4. The new Brass buck coming out this year
5. The 1990 "two-headed" Ike centennial commemorative
6. The 2013 5-star general dollar with Ike and Marshall on it
7. The 1993 D-Day commemorative, which has a quote from General Eisenhower on the back

And because I already own the following:

8. The 2007 Little Rock Central High School desegregation commem with the feet of the Little Rock 9 and a soldier from the 101st Airborne, which is directly linked to Ike as president. THIS coin I already have as part of another mini-set I have related to civil rights and famous African-Americans.

Anything I am leaving out? Along the lines of the indirect link in 8, I guess I could throw in the West Point 2002 commem, but then I'd have to also throw in other indirect links like the White House, all the Army-related coins, etc, which would be getting a bit far afield and expensive.

Maybe you all, especially Jbucks can tell me if I am missing anything.

Thanks. Kevin.

Who in their right mind would want to collect Eisenhower coins?

I, of course, am only kidding. This sounds like a good endeavor. I forgot about the golden Ike coming out this year. Every time a new set of these comes out I think to myself, "why, oh why, didn't the mint make these silver dollar issues for collectors only." A presidential silver dollar series would have been so cool.

I've considered a collection or sub-collection centered on a specific theme like this. I think it would be fun to assemble, and as a bonus, the coins in the collection tell a unique mini-story that adds to the overall story.

Of course, I totally approve this endeavour.

I am looking forward to the Eisenhower Coin and Chronicles set this year. If you do not mind expanding your set to include medals, I am sure the silver medal in that set will be a winner.

LOVE IT!
How are you thinking of displaying it? Framed? Some sort of album modified to
accept all this? Or is this just a 'free floating' collection?

For me, the 'medal' is not an option, but to each his own...
I have thought along these lines before, and never even considered #7. Good call.

My ideas have simply stemmed from the want to fill the 4 empty holes at the end
of the Ike (with proofs) Dansco. I am filling those 4 holes with #5 and #6, a
proof and an unc example of each... finishing out the 4 holes perfectly.

Now I have to find a way to put an unc and proof example of #7 in there. Thanks...
J/K! I'll probably leave that out simply for logistics. Like you said, if you
get too crazy, it gets too expensive.

I WILL however, find a way to get the PDS gold dollars into the Ike album. I will
probably buy a Dansco page to add to the album that accepts golden dollars. I just
have to find the option that leaves the fewest empty holes. IMO the Ike album won't
be complete without the golden dollars... even if I have to put up with plugging
some empty holes with old album page face material or something creative.

Well, if not for the brass buck Ike coming out later this year, I could have done them in a blank "silver dollar" page, but my 2013 Marshall/Ike is slabbed so I'll most likely just get some of those aftermarket slabs and slab the rest of the coins for consistency's sake and put them in a slab album.

As an added bonus, with the empty slabs I have left over, I can buy problem coins, slab them and create some sort of label called "Uncle Kevin's Numismatic Grading Service and Pest Control, LLC" (or UKNGSPC) and sell culls as MS-70s on ebay and retire with the proceeds

Thanks to all. I am definitely going to finish this run when the brass Ike comes out in the Summer.

Thinking of 20th and 21st century coinage, I wonder what other sorts of sets could be put together re: people? I know some folks like to put together thematic ones (e.g. coins with ships, military themes, etc).

What about other people besides Ike?

Off the top of my head, I guess Jefferson, Franklin, FDR, and Lincoln would have some very short sets, and then the Kennedy family and of course George Washington would have sets that are a bit longer. But Ike would probably have the largest of these sets, which I don't think anybody planned out; it just happened.

Kevin -

To answer a question you posed two posts back, I have always thought about doing some Lincoln-themed coin set, being somewhat inspired by the Lincoln Coin and Chronicles set of 2009. Although I wouldn't call the set short, as it would have more coins than your proposed Eisenhower set, would span three denominations, and would include:

1) 1909 Lincoln Wheat cent (or an example from 1910-58)
2) 1959 Lincoln Memorial cent (or an example from 1959-2008, although I'd prefer a brass over Zincoln)
3) 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial cent #1
4) 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial cent #2
5) 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial cent #3
6) 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial cent #4
7) 2010-present Lincoln Shield cent
8) 1918 Illinois Commemorative Half Dollar (with "Sad Abe" on obverse)
9) 2009 Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar
10) 2010 Lincoln Presidential dollar

I have each of these coins in at least some form in UNC, but never cobbled together into a single set. I thought it would have be cool to have a frame with the ten coins which allowed a holder holding the coins hinged to the frame so that the frame could be rotated out of the frame for viewing on both sides. I really surprised someone like Capitol hasn't put out a holder to do something like this, especially given the deserved reverence we hold for Lincoln which might lead many a collector to put together such a set, and the set wouldn't be too expensive, with the 1918 commem probably being the most expensive.

I do like your Ike idea, and I like how you got creative to include the D-day commem with the Ike quote on it.

Other than Ike and Abe, I don't think a type set for another American icon would be as large, unless you were to have a Kennedy set with all of the 50th anniversary finishes or a Washington quarter set with all of the state/parks reverses.

On the Lincolns, I would NOT just say that 1959-2008 is
simply covered by one example for a type set. IMO, 1959-1982
should be covered by an example, making a 'copper type'...
Then 1983-? (whatever year the mint did it's last mid-relief)
for a 'zinc mid-relief type'. After that, a final LMC type
for the shallow relief zincs.

Don't forget the 2003 Illinois State Quarter...
It has Lincoln stepping through the outline of the state.

The good thing about a Washington themed set is that since
1999 the obverse of the quarter has not changed... Not even the date!
So you would only need 1 Washington quarter to represent the
period from 1999 to date. The reverse doesn't matter, since
you are focusing on Washington himself, and not the designs on
the reverse or even the denomination.

Yeah, Washington and Lincoln would be other candidates for a good collection like this.

I was looking back through the commemoratives and also noticed that you could do the same for James Madison..... the man had a THREE COIN series that came out for the Bill of Rights, and his WIFE has a coin of her own. He also gets a brass buck and was he also not on the $1000 bill?

Another one: the Kennedy family siblings, three of whom have been on coins.

Thanks for all the observations and suggestions, folks.

I've decided on how to display this collection.

I bought a blank Dansco "silver dollar" album, which has 48 ports. I am filling 32 of these with the complete run of the 71-78 Ikes we all know and love (I've owned these for years in a cheap Ike folder), which leaves 12 holes. Into these will go:

(1) The 1990 "double-headed" Ike president/general commemorative dollar
(2) The 1991-1995 D-Day commemorative dollar with the Ike quote on the reverse (I will be flipping the coin to display the reverse)
(3) The 2013 5-star general commemorative dollar with Ike and Marshall
(4) the Ike Brass Buck coming out in April,

and

(5) The 2007 Little Rock commemorative dollar, which also ties to my collection of famous African-American commemoratives, which bridges the Ike collection to the African-American collection, and segues to:

That leaves 11 other full-sized holes left over, to which I will add my (1) Crispus Attucks dollar, (2) Jackie Robinson dollar, (3) 2014 Civil Rights Act Dollar, (4) Booker T. Washington 1950S half dollar, and (5) my butt-ugly Carver-Washington "anti-communist" 1951 half. That finishes both series, leaving several empty ports, one of which I will use for the $5 Jackie Robinson gold half-eagle (the key to the modern commemorative series) when I either hit the lottery or rob Chase Bank .

My next question: how do I fit the two 1950s halves and the new Ike brass buck into those "silver dollar-sized" ports? I am thinking I can use one side of a 2*2 cardboard flip to make an "adapter" or even a 2*2 plastic flip.

Thoughts from you album "engineers" would be most helpful. If you know of a commercial product that can do this at a reasonable cost, I would deeply appreciate some suggestions.

PS: for my next "project" I am going to do a Founding Fathers/Constitution/Declaration of Independence signers-advocates type set with Madison, Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, Adams, etc. But that's for another day.

Kevin.

Some coin capsules use foam spacers to fit various sized coins
into "universal" (consistent) sized capsules. Find out about
these spacers, and see if they lead you to a spacer that would
go around a half, while fitting snuggly into a dollar size hole.

This is what came to my mind when I was thinking about getting
the Ike PDS golden dollar set into my Ike dollar album.
