I got a pretty good deal on this book of Barber dimes that included this 1901-S dime noted as "barely legible". Do you see the mintmark? I can kind of when I look at it with my bare eyes.

I'm not seeing it.

They might have just put it there as a filler because it's a semi key date.

Actually the seller listed this as 1901-s (barely visible). I don't think it was put as a filler since there are other scarce dates that are not filled with something, only this one. I definitely see something that looks like a mintmark where it should be but not readable. Other coins in the lot are in much better condition several, F-VF. I am actually accepting what the seller stated since there does appear to be a mintmark, definitely not an "O" but barely visible.

That's definitely a slider, I don't see any mint mark.

I too don't see an S. And that has to be one of the most worn coins I've seen in a long time. Ever wonder how it got like that?

It's not wear. The coin had an appointment with something extremely corrosive in the past which ate most of the metal away. No way you should be able to see so much peripheral detail with the centers so worn. I'm guessing a long dirt bath in the wrong soil.

I'm not so sure I even see a blob where there should be a mint mark, much less a mint mark.

I can see a 'blob' but it requires mentally rotating the image 5 to 10 degrees to the left so that the coin is properly centered. I would be comfortable calling it an 's.'
But the coin is what it is - problematic.

Here is the images rotated. I do see a blob that looks like an "S".

36 dimes for $58 with shipping is $1.62 each. Good deal.
This little group will provide material for study and that education will pay for itself.
Sure, not all are 'full good' but there is no substitute for handling coins to learn about them.

WELL DONE.

Yes, good deal, even came with a Whitman book. Yes, you learn a lot going through lots like this. I thought of keeping all of these but come to think about it, I probably got quite a few duplicates but am unsure if I want to flip any of my fine or above Barber dimes.
