Found this amongst some Shield nickels and was wondering how to determine if it is or isn't a blank planchet. Not familiar with the planchets used for nickels during this time period. The thinner piece is of the coin in question.

The nickel five cent piece has had the same composition since 1866 (except for the 42 - 45 War Nickels) so you really can't tell a V, buffalo, or Jefferson nickel planchet apart. You might be able to identify a Shield nickel planchet though because they sould be slightly thicker and about .5 mm smaller in diameter.

It presents the correct appearance for a blank planchet, certainly.
