I saw this coin coin roll hunting and it just looked kind of odd.it is only a 1996 and it has considerable wear around the rim and in some places it looks worn down completely. Is this just damage or could of it happened at the mint?   *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** |

My best guess is that the planchet was a little thin at the rim, probably struck from an underweight piece of stock.
Either that or somebody rolled it through a knife sharpener quite a bit. ; )

That is often caused by the coin being caught in counting machines. I can not say for sure that is what happened but I have seen it before.

I know there have been kennedys have been struck on quarter stock but haven't seen any from this year, all I can say is weigh it.

Weight it real close. 11.34 grams is what I see in a publication for 1971 forward. Does it lay flat on a table?

The scale I own only goes down to the gram. I'll try to get my hands on a more precise scale in the next few days. And it does lay flat on a table.

It could be a slightly weak strike struck on a planchet with inadequate upset.
Error coin writer and researcher.

I'm sending my next batch of coins to NGC soon. Do you think it's worth having this one graded?
P.S-The weight was 11.10g
