Hi-

I just found this dime it is a 1968...
I can not figure out what it is considered for an error and how rare it might be?

The center of the back is in great condition some of the leaf/torch design is even clearly visible and you can also read very faint text and as you can see so is the front... I can't figure out how it happened?

I can't imagine anything at the mint that could cause this error.

someones feeble attempt to make a magic coin. at first I thought someone had used it as a spacer but that would remove the obverse as well so I think it was an attempt to make a double headed dime that failed miserably lol

Definitely post mint damage. It is hard to imagine all the possible ways that someone can damage a coin.

I really have no idea as to what damaged it.

Thanks,
Bill

I agree Gary, appears that it was on some kind of lathe in an attempt to hollow it out and make a Magicians coin.

If it wasn't for the date I would suspect a new attempt by the Mint to irritate people with a new design. Obviously some strange post Mint damage.

Here is a coin found in change. It is a Cent that was hollowed out on the reverse and a Dime will fit into it. Another magician coin of sorts that got spent.

Looks like it was dropped also.

I don't know what caused this but I will jump on the bandwagon here to say it is post mint damage and not an error simply because there is nothing that I know of at the mint as part of the minting process that would cause that look on the reverse of the coin
