I recently purchased a lot of nickels on ebay in hopes of finishing up my Jefferson nickel collection. The description was kind of vague, but there were lots of pictures and I saw lots of nickels in the thirties, a few in 2x2s labeled "proofs", some books and even some rolls. Even had some buffs in the pictures which I thought I could sell to pay for any coins I ended up still needing after searching through the mess.

I get the box and start looking through the various carded coins; lots of keys, but not all of them. I go through the square tubes and find lots of silver and got pretty happy.

Going through the loose bag (huge bag) of nickels I start to get angry - coins from the 1970s?

When all is said and done my collection is shy just one coin; a 1950-D.

Again, I'm feeling a little gyped. Nearly a hundred bucks and I still need one more darn coin!

I seem to remember the ad said something about 1950-Ds so I check the ebay listing and yes, the seller brags about how he just "dumps coin books" into the bag as they come in, "even the 1950-Ds."

Well, not in my bag , he didn't!

How many times and I going to fall for the "unsearched wheat cents bag" or the "estate sale" BS before I learn that...

Oh, wait. In the picture I notice a roll of nickels I had not opened yet.

"That's right" I said. "Because it was the only paper roll I put it aside because they always break apart.

So I go and get it.

And see that it is an original Federal Reserve paper roll

and

the
side

this
roll

1950-D!

Bandit? Yeah, I made out like one!

Probably not; I'm thinking of selling them as a roll.

Don't sell it as a roll? Break it up, sell one coin to each Forum Member, and make back what you spent on the auction. ^^

I can dream, can't I?

Calm down, folks. Remember, a new member needs 50 quality posts before any selling activity can take place, anyways. So, keep your reactions to plain jealousy for the moment.

I don't see how much was paid for the lot ?

But I guess that the price it was low enough to be considered a deal !

Nice, very nice... I always like hearing the good stories. So, congrats! I have had some luck with ebay but nothing quite so compelling. Personally, I liked the build up with the final unsearched roll at the end. Who says numismatics is not dramatic!

I think my first stop with the roll will be the Long Beach Coin Show next week. I'm interested in seeing how many Morgan dollars I can get for it!
