Do you think I should have the entire roll graded? Do any of the grading services offer an option where they look over the whole roll and only card those MS63 (or whatever grade you choose) or higher? If so, anybody have a direct link?
I'm going to the Long Beach Coin Show next week. Do the major grading services set up and grade coins there?
What are the reasons for taking them out of the roll (besides confirming that they are indeed all 1950-Ds? Is it because it is significantly more profitable to sell them individually?
Thanks again for any advice.

Thanks for the pictures. If I were you, I'd hold on to the roll for a while. If not, I would open them up and sell them individually, since you could always have a MS67 FS. Of an error or something. Either way, I don't think your going to lose any money. Obviously, selling the whole roll would be the quickest, because you only have one transaction. But once you open it you can pick out the best and sell the rest as an almost complete roll, or you can buy some additional 1950-d's to make up for the missing ones and sell it as a roll. Yes, it will be opened, but you'll get buyers.

With patience shotgun rolls CAN be opened, examined, and repacked. And having something written or stamped on the outside of the roll does not impress me at all. I can write anything I want on a roll, and I can have a rubber stamp made that says anything I want. I could get any old looking nickel roll I could find, say one with two tails and a D mint coin at each end, write 1950-D on it, then put it up on ebay with a throwaway account and I bet I could sell it for three to four hundred dollars easy. Take the money and run. If I want a bigger payout I could carefully open one end and replace the end coin with a 1950 "P", reclose it and get maybe $600.

WOW nice find! Amazing the seller didn't know what they had with a marked roll of 50-D nickels and let it go for $100...I think the roll marked 50-D would have been the first thing I would have looked at and torn into when I opened my package rather than sitting it aside!
Congrats on your great deal!

I'm taking the roll to the Long Beach Coin Show on Thursday to see if I get a significantly better offer on the $400 which has already been waved in front of my face. If I don't do much better I am seriously contemplating busting it open this weekend, kinda like playing the lottery, and see just how good the coins inside are. Opened rolls on ebay go for at least $400 so I couldn't do any worse by seeing what's inside! If I do that I will post pictures of the lot this weekend. To address your comment, I didn't know they were 1950-Ds as I had not even bothered to look at it or any of the other rolls.

I hate to revive a dead thread, but... So I finally opened the roll - the doubting Thomases on the board got me thinking it might be a fake roll - and I am happy to report that it is, indeed, a solid mint roll of beautiful BU 1950-D nickels! I have not uploaded the pictures to see if there are any "6 full steps" but they are a gorgeous bunch of coins. I still can't believe they came with a bunch of junk nickels! I am going to put them on ebay as a roll (now tube) of BU coins, but I am going to include the original paper roll just in case somebody wants it. Wish me luck!
