Here is another coin from my latest PCGS submission. It is an 1852-D (Dahlonega mint) Half Eagle. Just for fun, how would you grade it? This one is a little tricky (in my opinion).

XF-45 <-- just a complete guess, I'm a total novice when it comes to Dahlonega & Charlotte gold. I am counting on this being a weakly struck example. Looks like a fantastic piece of history!

I have no experience with these sorts of coins, any US classic gold I own is post-1900. I'll guess and say XF-40.

Great looking coin. The rim at 11:30 obverse concerns me a bit though. I must admit I looked your coin up and saw the grade on CoinFacts; It seems a tad under (market) graded for this series/date/mm combo. My guess before looking would have been an easy XF with a shot at AU50.
It really looks like a great Dahlonega gold piece.

BH1964 might have given me the clue to say EF40. I would have thought weak strike on the reverse and said AU.

I see it as a high VF. Although considering the Mint, low XF is possible.

I have it at VF, meaning from Dahlonega it's XF factoring strike weakness and enthusiasm for the issue. You kinda have to grade these to the price people will pay for them.

Quote: You kinda have to grade these to the price people will pay for them. Exactly. These are graded by price and not by wear. Just kidding but yeah, a VF35 by wear that trades at AU money is going to grade 45 or better. It's kind of crazy.

I'd guess VF35 from first glance

I'm torn between EF40/45 and AU50, technically I think it's a VF35 but Dahlonega gold is weakly struck and graded on a generous curve by most TPGs.
Gotta come up with a grade - so I'm going EF45
