I wish coin prices would fall or at least dip. Unfortunately this article discusses coins that few average collectors will ever own. I really don't care that prices for 1793 Chain Cents have remained stable. They could skyrocket for all I care. I'm more concerned about the prices of Draped Liberty Cents or Capped Bust Dimes which in my opinion are not falling.

From a quick look at NumisMedia price tables it sure looks like you're right about those two series

Note that the author is mostly discussing the top of the market. I'd bet that the middle isn't quite as stable and is trending down overall.

I see more of a tale of 2 cities scenario. Coins at Heritage are selling for record high prices, but, on ebay, these same coins are either not selling or a selling at a huge discount to Heritage. (Note: I use Heritage as they essentially are the only auction house, the others are dwindling). I believe once these big Heritage buyers are stuck an unable to unload their over-priced inventories, Heritage prices will start to retreat and ebay prices will start to rise. I believe this will happen very shortly......watch the Long Beach auction at the end of this month.

The fine arts market, which includes numismatic items, has in the past vaguely followed the gold spot price. Other commodity prices including crude oil, have fallen recently, but the spot gold price has remained relatively stable.
With this as a current background, it is possible to make a reasonable assumption that numismatic prices will also remain relatively stable, except for the super high end material.
Invest in oil (perhaps 10 year?) futures instead. I think there is increasing pressure in this area, as the spot crude price drops. World oil supply and demand past 'peak oil' in 2012, and the oil price is quite askew currently.

I worry about the value of all key/rare coins over the long haul. I'm afraid coin collecting, may go the way of stamps, sports cards & beanie babies(no I never collected beanie babies). I love my key coins & I don't want to part with them, but I'm afraid some day, that they might not be worth much more than scrap or melt. I hope I'm wrong, but in the meanwhile, I'm going to keep buying as much silver as I can afford, while it's as low as it is. Happy hunting!

According to the infamous Red Book, 4 factors alone decide the increase or decrease in market value of coins. Increasing & decreasing bullion price is the sole common denominator for either category (rises & falls)...so if you figure out how to predict the bullion market, you'll have it made in the shade! (If you do figure this out, I kindly request you please fill us in in advance.)

I believe the market is trending down a bit (I've go NO solid evidence to back that up). But if you factor in inflation then it truly is going down.

Try to remember that almost anyone can, and usually does, write some kind of story about something they may or may not have any idea of. This is the internet and you can read almost anything on it. Some true, some guesses, some just dumb. Many are just things made up to get someone's name in print. As to the coin market. It's been booming to some degree for thousands of years. Heck I'll be even cave men tried to make and collect coins. I really wonder if there are people around from some other world from all those flying saucers. If so, sure wish they would get on this forum so I could ask about their coins and maybe even get some. Ever wonder what a Romulan coin would look like? As to our coin market, there are new coin shows popping up almost every year so must be doing OK.

Quote: Ever wonder what a Romulan coin would look like? Now you're just being silly. Everyone knows Romulans don't use coins, they use "Talons". If they are trading with anyone else, they use the standard intergalactic currency...bars of gold pressed Latinum.

If anything, from what I have seen on ebay, coin prices trend. After the holidays they are high. I picked up a lot of coins cheap at the end of Summer when most people worry about spending money on their vacation.
