I'm hoping to buy some US gold coins this year. I think I will be looking at small gold coins first.

Can anyone help me out with a list of books I should get before I start buying coins?

For one that covers gold from 1795-1933 and all denominations you might want to check out

Garrett & Guth's Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933

Used copies of the first are more affordable and the basic info doesn't outdate just the price guide. Here's one on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/WHITMAN-ENC...em233e958fcd

You can take a peek inside the second edition on Amazon to see if it one that suits your needs.

If you're after a specific denomination or mint I can offer some specific books on those.

Thanks a lot, MeadowviewCollector!

I grabbed that last old edition on the bay -- I don't believe any of the 'price/value' information in the books anyway since it's out of date by the time the books are printed.


I haven't picked out a favorite coin yet, but I was looking at buying some $5 and smaller coins.

Recently I have become fascinated with California gold. But I think I will start with old tiny US gold this year and learn what I can about that.

I clicked my way here looking for gold books. A little early to the scene it seems, but thanks to MV for starting this off.

I have no books to contribute, but they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

In this link there are 779 high quality photos of graded US gold coins so that is like 779,000 words worth or something like that.

Any book by David Akers would be a good purchase. Superb researcher and writer who passed in 2012.
