I'm looking for some help?! I came across this coin in my Grandfathers collection. It has an unusual portrait of queen Victoria, which has been added at a later date. After searching the Internet couldn't find anything like it. Just wondering if anyone can shed any light on it? Thanks

Hello Chris!
The term "Hobo Nickel" in general means a coin altered by an artistic person:
1) To make money - the 'hobo' takes an American nickel, carves a design, and sells it for what he can obtain.
2) A person with an agenda - either pro or anti the person portrayed

As the image looks vaguely Asian perhaps this coin has a link there.

For further information:

There is a British Penny shown here.

Thanks very much for the information! I didn't know people even did that. The carving is very detailed and quite similar to the example on Wikipedia. Thanks again

I think these kinds of coin art are great to have.

Came across this one in my box of tokens a while back...

Interesting piece of Boer War Trench Art RED, makes a change from the classic hat and pipe. Reminds me of Scotland.
