I wrote a response but it sounded like such a rant. So, I will say this only;

To those who say in twenty or thirty years all coins of $100 will be certified I can only say if I am alive and collecting that will not be true as My collection will not be in a TPG holder. But then people tell me I am weird all the time.

I for one have no desire for TPG graded coins in any price range under say $10,000 - less desire than I have for ungraded ones at least, and I don't think I'll be buying any $10,000+ coins any time in the near future.

You must be a risk-taker. My threshold is around $300 before I need the TPG. I also do collect some toners so I usually buy those TPG graded to authenticate the toning (NT vs AT).

They are no bubble. They are successful because so many people want convenience and instant grading, not wanting to bother to learn how to grade which is a real fun part of the hobby. We get into fights over that. It's like when convenience foods took over the made from scratch foods. Quick, instant, ready to sell. Drive through windows, instant messaging, microwave warm up, faster downloads; all part of the same phenomenon. There will always be raw too. Many collectors, especially copper and Bust halves just love to break those coins out of their plastic coffin to get a real look and feel. Because anything you love, you want to touch. People, coins, pets, cars you name it....

Before we had grading companies dealers would hype how great the coin you wanted was and when you went to sell it was valued much less by the dealer. We all knew how to grade and appreciate coins then and we still do. Lets just consider the TPG as a referee who in a sense keep the buyer and seller honest by offering a third professional and hopefully consistent opinion. I would go a step further and say it makes collector to collector transactions easier.
