I've decided that I want to assemble a complete set of Native American dollars (2009 to present)and what I believe constitutes a complete set is the following:

2009P position A business strike
2009P position B business strike
2009P position A satin
2009P position B satin
2009D position A business strike
2009D position B business strike
2009D position A satin
2009D position B satin
2009S proof
2010P position A business strike
2010P position B business strike
2010P position A satin
2010P position B satin
2010D position A business strike
2010D position B business strike
2010D position A satin
2010D position B satin
2010S proof
2011P position A business strike
2011P position B business strike
2011D position A business strike
2011D position B business strike
2011S proof
2012P position A business strike
2012P position B business strike
2012D position A business strike
2012D position B business strike
2012S proof
2013P position A business strike
2013P position B business strike
2013D position A business strike
2013D position B business strike
2013S proof
2014P position A business strike
2014P position B business strike
2014D position A business strike
2014D position B business strike
2014S proof

I come up with 38 coins in the set though 2014. I'm not done finding the coins I need for this set and I've found it to be a bit of a challenge to find all of the position A's and B's as few people seem to acknowledge the difference.

What do you think? Am I missing anything?

Since, according to The Mint, the positioning of A vs. B is a random occurrence, I would think that would give you an "out" to ignore the distinction between Position A and Position B coins.

That's what I would do. But it's your collection.

I know many people are not fans of the Prez. dollars and the Native American coins, but I find the designs interesting.

I don't really care for the Presidents but I do like the Native American dollars. I think the designs are the best of all current US coins.

As for the random occurrence of position A and B coins I think the fact that the mint intentionally issues them that way makes them worth collecting.

Aye, the designation of A vs B originated as a mistake and speculation on the part of TPGs. The proof coins are only supposed to have one position, as it's imprinted during the strike as part of the collar. For business strikes, they can fall into the edge letterer (a separate step) in either direction. It's literally a "coin flip" :-)

The TPGs mixed this up and started designating A vs B thinking that it was a genuine error (that it was like the proofs) rather than a 50:50 occurrence. They're not a *true* "variety."

I thought about including the A&B coins but decided against it since it is random by design and I'm not specializing in the series. If I were it would still be cool to include 1 of each and a real challenge to locate since many dealers do not specify the positions. I would also include the 2014D EU coin as well.

It was part of last years coin and currency set. Everyone thought that it was just another late year fill in by the mint, a native american coin and a 2013 series one dollar bill. Then as people ordered it , they realized the mint snuck in an enhanced uncirculated NA dollar instead of a regular business strike. The only EU Native American dollar, Only the third EU coin ever and only 50,000 minted, makes this a very hot coin right now.

I missed that one altogether. I guess this is like the 1994 and 1997 Jeffs issued as part of the special coin and currency sets.

Thanks.

I'll need to add that to my "complete" collection.

Wait.

If it's an enhanced uncirculated coin does that mean position A and B?

Goodness sakes, what have I gotten myself into?

There are A & B versions of this coin. I kept 1 of each just in case.

Good move.

The Native American dollar coins are turning out to be a more challenging set than I originally thought.

So with the 2014D EU position A and position B there are actually 40 coins in the 2009 to 2014 set.

I agree with you on the NA designs. They are interesting in their variety and so far have been well-executed. My daughter, who is 10 years old, loves the "Sac and her baby" obverse, and she and I both like the "three sisters" reverse, because it's so important to the development of native culture and the survival of early settlers in America. She also likes the 'doggie' reverse

I remain a fan of the prez dollars, too. Some of the portraits are weird, though, and even though the Statue of Liberty on the back is OK, I don;t care for the reverse; I wish they had used the original Sac dollar reverse with the flying eagle.... that was cool.

I cannot see the edge lettering when the coin is in a Dansco, so I do not care about A/B. To be honest, I do not really care about P/D since the mint mark was moved to the edge. If the reverse did not change every year, I would have just one and call it complete.

I wanted to collect Native Americans, but my wife said, "no", "I can't handle one, why would I want more?".
