Last week I was going through some stuff and when opening a wooden box that had some odds and ends stored in it I noticed a blue coin envelope I hadn't known was in there, inside was a 1995 Silver Eagle. God knows how long it'd been in there- my guess is most of the past twenty years. What I noticed on inspection is that the coin has toned to a blueish, not overly so but a nice soft blue on the highlights. Could that have been due to the color of the envelope? Have not had this happen before. I don't collect this series and may put it on Ebay- it would be an attention grabber.

Tough call from your description; it all depends on the envelope. It's more likely that it's the "usual" toning caused by sulfur content in the paper, but I can't discount the possibility that color has physically leached from the envelope onto the coin. Any way to get images of it?

Hi coins, you should know better Im not sure about the color of the envelope being the catalyst for the color on your coin in terms of direct transfer. But have you seen my neon blue album toned rainbow Silver Eagles on my "stunned & overwhelmed" thread? If not you should check them out

That blue color is normal for silver, it has nothing to do with the envelope and everything to do with reactive gasses getting to the coin. Most likely outgassing from the wood.

Or the paper got wet once. Don't forget, he mentioned it being only on the highlights and we haven't seen it yet.

No I haven't forgotten posting a scan the problem is- the toning does not show up well on it. It's a delicate sort of light blue that shows up on the high points but when scanned the coin sort of looks flat. I can try to post a pic but I don't think it would be picked up well, that's the problem with scanning coins. I am often pleasantly surprised when I buy a coin on ebay that arrives and looks better than the scan. May try anyway this weekend, stay tuned.

Scanners can't depict color and luster. Well, color kinda, but saturation is trashed and cannot communicate the true color of the coin. And luster, kinda, but instead of bright it's dark.
