I don't have an ideal stack size.
My bullion silver comes from numiusmatic by-purchase of World silver coins that may be included in a numismatic bulk purchase. Although only silver bullion value, such a stash can be very numismatically interesting.
Some day, I may cash it all in, to contribute to the purchase of a nice ancient gold coin.

I set my 2015 goal at 100 oz of bullion by the end of the year and with prices down I may have to adjust to 150 oz. :) My long term goal is the moon and back again. Now don't get me wrong, silver is great, but there are coin collections and the numastic side of the house that still take precedence. I'd still rather have more invested in numastics than straight bullion, but when the prices are low and I'm having trouble finding any coins for my collection I can either waste it on bullion or other items in life. Of course in six months when I'm moving all numastic and bullion purchases will stop while I re-establish myself.

Yeah, there's a serious disconnect between what the MSM says the "average" person will need in retirement versus the reality of what the "average" person will realistically be able to save along the way. Few people get to pull off that "big" number so just save the most you can whenever you can. Every little bit can make a big difference later.

I do not have an end amount in mind. I just stack it away whenever possible. Since I am just beginning I think a reasonable goal for this year would be 100 oz. I am already 4/10 of the way there.

$100 face value of silver by 2016. I suppose if you count my 20 for 20 coins I am all ready there but you know what I mean. :-)

Would like to have: $1000 face in 90% junk silver (so that's about 715 ounces) $500 face in Morgan and Peace dollars (roughly 375 ounces with wear taken into account) 250 ounces in bars/rounds 1 oz style 100 ounces in 5 ounce bars 100 ounces in 10 ounce bars 100 Silver Eagles 100 Silver Maples Maybe about 25 ounces in gold mixed with Gold Eagles of all sizes, Gold Maples of all sizes, some U.S. Liberty gold coins $5, $10, and $20, a couple St Gaudens, maybe a Krug and a gold Buffalo.

I recently hit a major collecting milestone. 1000 individual pieces of silver, consisting of coins, bars, and rounds. That equals out to exactly 1285.347 ozs. of AG. Not sure where I'll go from here. I typically stick to coins with far more numismatic value than just the bullion weight. One of these days, maybe I'll start building a gold coin collection. As a disabled vet, money's always tight, so I'm intimidated by gold purchases. It's so much easier to chuck down, at the very most, $100-200 for a silver purchase than what? $700 for half an oz. of gold? Ouch! And collecting smaller fractional gold coins doesn't appeal to me.

My stacking goal is to have 10% of total assets in gold coins. I keep the coins in safety deposit boxes, but take a (mediocre) photo of each before putting it away. Silver is too bulky for this, so my silver stack is mostly just for curiosity. For example, some time ago I got 400 worn-out Barber quarters ($100 face), and sorted them by date. There was one from each year (1892-1915), but obviously none of the rare mint marks.

So does anyone "color up" and convert silver to gold in order to save space? I'd be worried that there would be transaction fees to do so.

My original goal was 300 troy ounces of BU silver bullion coins. I finally hit 300 t oz of Ag but better than half that weight is in nice 90% junk coin. Storage space is very limited for me so now days I try to only buy things I really like and that have potential for numismatic price appreciation over the long haul.

Thanks, CW. On a positive note, at least we're no longer "forced"to pay $35 a pop for run-of-the-mill ASEs like we were only three short years ago. For people with the urge to stack, these are relatively good times, indeed, my friend :)

For my part, that was a costly lesson learned, Traevin. I know 2012 may have been an exciting time here on the forums but I still cringe thinking about the prices I willingly paid to start building my modest stack. I'm liking today's prices MUCH better. Good times, indeed!
