Last week-end, I went to a coin show in my area. I was looking over some display and catch a part of a discussion about grading. A buyer was looking for a Edward VII and late Victoria coins. He asked the dealer if the coin was dipped. The dealer answered I don't know but dipping is more critical when you reach MS grade. Pay more attention on polishing or rubbing instead of dipping on lower grade.

In my point of view, whatever you dip or not, you change the finish of the surface. I prefer a EF coin wich have some patina then a uniform color clean dipped coin.

It might be a personnel choice on which kind of coins you like (dip or not). What is the genral way of thinking about dipping coins?

I'm not sure what the general opinion is, but I agree with what you have said. I have bought my share of dipped coins in the past (not knowing it was dipped when I got it off ebay) and I would honestly let them go for much less just to get rid of them and buy something else.

We have a couple 'dipped' coins and we don't mind them at all.

when he said rubbed and polished... that doesn't sound like music to a numismatist's ear!
