Hi everyone, Unfortunately, I think I have two cases of bronze disease. I have two dolphin coins and just noticed the green spots last night. I understand that I soak them in distillers water for a few days and go at them with a toothpick. If that doesn't solve it, then I soak in baking soda and distillers water for a few more days. Am I right about this? Just for an added bit of info, I put my coins in cardboard flips which are then stored in a binder with coin sheets. As always, I appreciate your input! Thanks, Erin

I unfortunately can't see that well right now ( what I get for playing video games until 1 am ) but if it is a mild case of BD then this stuff will take care of it . http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/verdigone/ . Good luck !

Pick off the green before you put into DW. Make sure that you get every scrap off. Make sure you are not taking of green patina which is not BD. Get some verdi-care and follow the instructions. After you have finished, you will need to keep an eye on the coins forever, it can return. Make sure you keep the coins separate from your other coins, it is catching.

Larger and clearer pictures would help, It's difficult to say with these.

Many ancient coins do have a stable green patina coming from verdigris or not. After whatever you do, ensure that the coin is totally dry and all water removed (dip in acetone as a last step is one option).

Thanks everyone. I'll try and take some better pictures tomorrow. I only have my iPhone, but I'll see what I can do.
I noticed some green spots on the tail and head of the first dolphin yesterday. They weren't there before.
On the second, there was already a bit of a green patina, but it's starting to get a bit different shade of green at the top.
I think I'll try putting them in distilled water. Does it matter if it's a plastic container or should I use glass?
Thanks again!
Erin

take it out of the flip and scrape the green spots with your fingernail or a toothpick. does any of the green stuff come off as a powdery type stuff? if no, it's not BD. if yes, then pick it off as best as you can, soak in DW for a couple 3 days, pick again. happy with it. stop. if not, fresh water and repeat until good.
i do use verdicare, but after I do the dip and pick for at leat one cycle.
make sure to dry coin when done with the water soak, if you use verdicare or not. I put my coins in the oven for 20 minutes at 200 F. in the summer, I set them out on my back deck on an alluminum pie pan and let he soak do the work.

Unfortunately, we live in the dinosaur ages of technology in my house - dial up, very basic printer. So, my phone is my only camera :(.
I think I'm going to get the VerdiCare stuff.
I didn't know you could put coins in the oven. I'll do that too.
Thanks for all the replies, I do appreciate them.
I'll start the process when I get home today and hopefully be successful!
Thanks again,
Erin

I pinched this picture from the camera forum. I just use a halogen spot and rest the phone on an upturned tub. Focus and click. Then, if you are happy with the photo go to the edit part of the camera and use the crop function. Take away all the background and save. Use that image to post on the forum. Edit: Better to email it to yourself so you can change the filename if you are posting more than one photo.

That is a really nice set up, pishpash! I heard that you can get zoom lenses for the iPhone, but I haven't found one yet.
The first dolphin's spots showed up a few days ago- lime green spots on either end. The second one already had a green patine, but I noticed the top turning the same lime green color as the first.
I have them in distilled water for the night. I tried to take some of the green off with a tooth pick, but wasn't too successful. I think there's an extra toothbrush around here that ill use.
Thanks so much,
Erin

Quote: turning the same lime green color That's not a good sign. Best to brush it off with a clean and dry brush and then dip in acetone, which should seal it off.
