I was just wondering what everyone collects while waiting for the key or last few coins to collect in their sets. I am putting money away for the 1995 (W) proof silver eagle NGC MS70 and while I do that I bought a State Quarter dansco to fill from pocket change. Thanks

I buy a little bit of every other u.s. coins. the only series I don't own is the 20CENT PIECE and all gold denominations. these were always out of my reach. the key that I really want is the S-VDB.

I search my change for the 'picture' quarters I don't have. I'm only collecting those from circulation and it's just for fun.
I collect 'critter coins' too. I buy those from junk bins at shows.
If it wasn't for the 'fun' collections I think I would have given up on coins because I can only make a couple of 'imporrant' purchases a year.

Collecting "Types" does not pose that problem with me.

I do the same as others, I collect Jefferson nickels and ATBs from pocket change and other cheaper sets. Nothing worse than being $60 short on that key coin you have been waiting to become available, because you picked up two Peace dollars on a lark from your LCS. I always try to collect the keys first when starting a new set. Firstly I don't have to sit with a partially completed set while I wait. Secondly I don't have to watch the keys go up and up in price while I fill in the less expensive coins.

I don't have a whole lot of time to wait ..not 30 anymore Don't get me wrong, still in good health and still buying green banannas, but as far as coins go, when I need a key date, I find one at a reasonable price if I can afford it, buy it and move on.

DUST!!
When I first started out I wouldn't wait for the next one so I would just buy what every caught my eye. I was addicted to buying I guess Now I will wait months between purchases.

Quote:Collecting "Types" does not pose that problem with me. You should've seen my kopek type set. I've pretty much ran out of types I find affordable, but I know there are a few other types I'm still supposed to get. Over 2015, now that I realized that I honestly don't have anywhere to continue with it, I decided to expand it to a general Russian low-denomination type set (not necessarily limited to kopeks). Now I both have a lot more types to collect and a lot more keys to worry about (but right now I'm far from the point where I would need to worry about keys). (And yes, I'm always for picking a bunch of random stuff from bargain bins. I even managed to find some US types I didn't yet have that way.)

I have a "must buy" set, and if I see it, I must buy it. Some variations have only two or three known examples. Meanwhile, I can upgrade other variations if the price is attractive. Still, that may be only one purchase per month - not nearly enough for a coin junkie, so I do my folders from circulation, clean and reorganize. Foreign coins are always fun. I pay less than a quarter, and can clean, research and photograph. (Cleaning is acetone, not a wire brush.)
