I'm trying to complete a bullion silver eagle dansco album. I need 3 more years but many questions popped up along the way of collecting.

Every dealer I talked to at the coin show I recently went to, no dealer had 1996 coins and only one 1995. I kept getting the answer mid 90's silver eagles are hard to come by.

Was there a reason for the low mintage on the bullion version?

1994 through 98 were the lowest mintages, all below 5 million which sounds like a large number until one considers how many of these are held as bulk silver. So they're a sort of artificial rarity as a result. Can't address the specific reason for the reduction in mintage for those years, though.

I agree .. with those years are the lowest mintages so far.

Most sellers I have seen only charge more for the 1996's.

What I find interesting 4 or 5 different dates as having a
premium. I always have to check what the dates are.

I seemed to grab the 1994 and 1998's when I see them are regular
bullion ASE prices.

My guess the falling silver prices may be why the mintages for those years were the lowest. Silver had been falling for about a decade and a half. Maybe some people had given up hope and decided to sell the silver eagles that they had purchased when the program just began. With enough supply, the distributors probably didn't need to order as much from the U.S mint. This is just a hunch of mine which may or may not be right.

From what I can tell using http://www.coinnews.net/coins/the-a...int-figures/ the spot price were not bad during the mid 90's compare to early 90's, it was rising. But I do see your falling spot price from the 80's caused by the hunt brothers fatigue on buying but I can't imagine it causing such a big difference.... Strange.

Congress went crazy authorizing commemoratives for multiple programs during this time. http://moderncommemoratives.com/

1994: World Cup, Capitol Bicentennial, POW, Vietnam Memorial, Women in Military

1995 and 1996: Olympics along with various other ones

I'm guessing the flood of products hurt sales and may have turned collectors off.

I know you're asking about the Bullion Eagles, but the Proof Eagles are tough in the mid-90's also. The most expensive (by far) Proof Eagles are '93-'95. I'm living that dream, because I'm doing the same thing you are with PCGS PR70 Eagles. I'll never get a '95W, but someday on the '93P, '94P and '95P. Prices have been coming down, but unfortuantley at the same time my bills are going up...

Few dealers make a market in older material- that's the second big problem you run up against. The way the current market is run, dealers focus on current issues and try to sell through as much of that material as possible in a given year.
