I compared this coin with a 10 cent piece of the same year. it weighs 2.5 grams and is just ever so slightly larger than a dime.( 18.7mm) Any ideas what it could be? and, what grade would you give it?

47: is there any way to look at what other coins the mint was making for other countries in that year? Perhaps a foriegn planchet?

Nice coin. If your weight is accurate, then it is struck on a Cu-Ni planchet intended for a Dominican Republic 1986 10 Centavos... That is the kind of coin I send to PCGS, except I would not send that specific one, because of the long, light, arcuate scratches on the obverse

how could I miss that. SPP u are right. why would these scratches matter that much to PCGS? would they not simply assess a grade and mark it "light" scratches? what grade could this coin possibly get as is?

With scratches like that I would put your odds at 50-50, that the coin comes back either graded (MS-62 or MS-63) or comes back in a "Genuine" holder... $75 is a bitter pill to swallow, getting your error identified and only having it end up in a 'Genuine' holder - error buyers shy away from those, or pay considerably less... Quote: would they not simply assess a grade and mark it "light" scratches? Nope - neither NGC nor PCGS operate that way, when it comes to problem coins. They validate that the coin or error is authentic, but do not assign grades to problem coins. Scroll down to the 'Problem Coins' section here: http://www.pcgs.com/grades/

SPP already identified. Here are 4 struck on Dom Rep 10 Centavos from my collection. All weigh from 2.50 to 2.52 grams.

I haven't run across any others but I have only been paying attention to Canadian errors for about 6-7 years.
