Can someone identify this little shard of silvery metal please?
I had the thought it might be Viking but in the end it could be any thing at all...

Venetian: you can see the "dux" on the obverse just left of the face, and on the other "...MARCVS VENETI" around the central fuzzy thing, which is supposed to be a winged lion. Can't say too much more than that at the moment, the catalogues I've got on Venice only focus on the big boys, and ignore the shards.

Edit: "big boys". Meant to say, "big boys".

Thanks for the research anyway - got it in a lot for nothing so this one's just for curiosity really. It has to be the weirdest one I've got so far - and indication of era?

Venetians are impossible to date without being able to read the name of the doge, but we may be in luck this time. I believe I can read "ANTO..." to the right of the kneeling (or standing) figure, and "PRIO DVX" to the left. Take your pick from this list of Doges of Venice. I think the best match is Antonio Priuli (1618-1623), a time period which matches well with the style of the coin. The CoinArchives page for this Doge doesn't illustrate anything that matches yours exactly.
