This is a representative example of an interesting coin in the draped bust large cent series.
Sheldon-202 - with obverse die massively shattered at lower left, and with obverse and reverse die bulges. The dies had been used extensively by the time this coin was struck.
The coin has some edge taps/knocks that do distract, but fortunately retains good, hard surfaces.

A hard coin to grade given the condition of the dies - how would you grade it?

VF-30 would be my guess, possibly with a notation of rim damage. if it were my coin I would be happy because I think the nice surfaces and quality outweigh the rim nicks.

Yeah, VF25 or so.

Great coin and a tough one. That die probably shattered shortly after this.

VF-25 TDS. Terminal die state. I base my grade on the eye and mouth detail. Awesome coin, you never fail to impress GERMANICVS. I also love any reason to pull out Penny Whimsy.

GERMANICVS as always your coins are a delight to view! I'd go with a VG+++ to Fine EAC grade on this coin, the Condition Census is only seven coins grading higher than Fine per the Husak (Heritage) catalog, your coin is probably, if not CC8 or 9!

Thank you all.
S-202 seems to exist primarily in low grades. As you say, the highest graded example is EAC VF25-VF30 or so.
I grade this one conservatively as VG8, maybe 1-2 points higher. Would be great if it made the cc for the variety! I think I only have one other such coin, an S-105 in F12.

I would say f15, as an ordinary TPG grade.

Anyone know how eac would handle grading a coin like this?

For some reason I think they would say maybe f12 - not for the die problems, but rather because they are just more picky about wear on a coin.

GERMANICVS and Vermontensium would know better than anyone else on the forum. That's pretty much what we're discussing. I think that's the reason for GERMANICVS' post, how does one grade a coin like this?

It just occurred to me that I never thanked you, west coin, for posting this beautiful example from the Holmes collection.
Thanks again!
