WOOT WOOT, Look what I happened to find when I was going through my bulk Morgans and Peace dollars. The Obv. has black specks on it, bummer. I can't seem to find a mint mark Do I send this in to get slabbed? I'm not familiar with these coins, the luster seems to be there. It it starting to tone. Maybe it was cleaned a long time ago? How to tell? Thanks

Great find, looks to be MS. The black specks appear to be very regular trianges, have you inspected them under magnification to determine just what they may be?

The black stuff is something on the coin, not toning. Could be PVC, but it's not green in any way. Just black raised spots of yuck.

Black spots are probably carbon spots.
You could send it to NGC for "conservation" and grading but that's up to you. They might be able to mitigate the spot problem without damaging the luster.

Try to get the spots off with acetone, otherwise it may grade ED details.

Someone really goofed when they sold this dollar as a common date.

It's a nice find. I'm a bit concerned about the shape of the 8 but it's likely just the camera angle playing tricks - it is probably a genuine 1928 S$1. Perhaps an old cleaning but not a bad one, the detail is close to UNC. I believe you've got a $200 to $300 coin on your hands and maybe a bit more than that.

Score! 1928 is worth over $200 in any condition and that one is not bad at all. I'd soak it in Acetone and send it in. Quote: Someone really goofed when they sold this dollar as a common date. You can say that again!

Looks like a "sneeze" coin. Highly likely it will get a DETAILS grade.

Those spots don't detract from the eye appeal of this coin much at all, IMO. Not like a bunch of bag marks would. That's a really sharp strike, with exceptional detail. It has 'great bones', as the saying goes. If you ever decide to peddle that piece, you will have buyers lined up out your door.

Anybody else concerned about the gouge under the word "God"? Could be just a bag mark, I guess. I'd definitely give it an acetone bath (can't hurt) and get it slabbed and be prepared for it to come back as "details". But even so, the strike is excellent for a late 20s Peace dollar. This is one of my favorite series and I don't have a 1928 yet. I do have a 1921 and a 1934S, and most of the late 20s coins, and like I said the strike is great for that era and this coin.

I like the coin. The black marks hopefully will be able to get rid off with acetone. If acetone does not do the trick, you may want to try benzene. I would not send it to TPG with the black spots on it.

KevinH, that is not a gouge under "GOD", it's more of that black stuff. Acetone does not remove it. It is sticky and can be scraped off with a tooth pick. I really don't want to scrape anything on this coin for fear of damaging it.
Maybe it's tar of some type? But it's definitely on the coin, not in it. It does have misc. bag marks. The only real gouge on the Obv. is at the bridge of her nose. On the Rev. in front of the beak. On the eagles neck, looks like something was stamped in the die with it, see that squiggly line? Other than that, just standard little marks here and there.
I pulled one of my bigger cameras out of the closet. Let me play around and see if I can get more detail for you all.
There seems to be luster as it does the cartwheel thing, it's just a dull cart wheel.
Thank you all for the comments.
