I recently learned of this coin and want one. I found the comments by
swamperbob and jfransch to be very helpful and figured I better start the long process of educating myself and join a forum for advice and
discussions. I bid $180 on the uploaded picture in ebay. I asked the seller if he could send me a pict of the edge and size and weight. He sent me edge pict and size which checked out(according to my limited knowledge), then I found listing was canceled. I asked him what happened , he said he took coin to a coin dealer and was informed,
"...it was underweight, lettering showed signs of casting and condition overall did not match the edge which was way more worn than rest of coin". I thanked him for his honesty and cried a little since it was such an eye appealing coin and had such nice tone. I now realize finding a similar quality authentic coin will to say the least be very challenging.

Any advise where I can pick one up other than ebay or Coin Show?

A few years ago I collected several pillar 8 reales from ebay and had some good luck, however the monitoring for counterfeits and forgeries seem to be non-existent nowadays so I would be very careful. I sent mine to NGC and PCGS for authentication and grading and not all were considered genuine.

The safe bet is buying a slabbed NGC or PCGS. Heritage and Stack's Bowers feature these in many of their world coin auctions. Dan Sedwick usually has a few too. If you want to collect raw examples, you may want to look at Spanish auction houses like Aureo & Calico. Good luck and happy hunting.

I would suggest joining USMexNA and making the effort to learn about these fascinating coins. There are many knowledgeable dealers in that organization that will take the time to help you start a collection and teach you how to determine if a Pillar Dollar is real or fake. Attending their annual gathering in Arizona in October is 2 days of great presentations and exposure to incredible coins, including Spanish Colonial Pillar and Portrait dollars. Swamperbob gave a 2 hour presentation last year on counterfeits that was really interesting and educational.
As for purchasing Pillar Dollars, I would avoid ebay and recommend the following three dealers for starting a collection:
Paul Brombal (Santa Barbara, CA)
Mike Dunigan (Fort Worth, TX)
Mexican Coin Company (Carefree, AZ)
