It is dated Heisei Year 9, by the way. That should translate into 1998.

The side with the young bamboo shoot reads something along the lines of "Great Nippon" at the top, the bottom says "1 Yen"

The date is on the reverse with the large numeral 1, and the first two characters on the left indicate the Emperor's reign. The third character is the number 9 in Japanese, and the last character indicates "Year of Reign." Or something like that. It's how I think of it at any rate.
