On Dec. 22nd, I went to my LCS and noticed a small stack of impaired proof silver Eagles for sale. After going through them, I selected the best looking one (not saying much, given the scratches and scuffs) and one that's from my birth year, pictured below. It's now my pocket piece.

This is it now, after a month in my pocket.

Wear started rapidly, surprisingly enough, on the clear stripe in front of Liberty's right leg. Then the curl in the flag below the arm. Hairlines set in after the first two weeks. Also suffered a rim ding when it fell on a stone floor last weekend.

I'll post a new update each month on the coin as it goes on its journey. Just prod me if it's been more than a week from the 22nd of each month.

Eh, I'd rather have a neat memento to carry around than have it get tucked away in my collection. Besides, the wear has buffed out some of the scratches! Haha

It was pretty much bullion as an impaired proof, so it's not like you are reducing the value. I think it will be very cool momento as time passes.

Very cool!

Do you keep it in your pocket by itself, or with change/keys/etc?

I carried a 2013 (daughter's birth year) bullion ASE a few months back. It was starting to wear nicely, but also had its share of dings and nicks from being in the same pocket with my keys and usually some small change. I decided to give it a break and put it away for awhile. Currently carrying a 1974 silver Ike.

Normally, it's kept in a pocket by itself, but occasionally I put my keys in the same pocket. Only light scratches from that for now, so it'll be interesting to see how that progresses.

Interested in seeing latest progress.

Here's my 2013 that I have been carrying on and off for nearly a year:

It's my daughter's birth year, and I bought it only about a week before she was born. It started out BU.

Why do people have "pocket pieces"? Is it to get a unique circulated coin or what?

Some people could do it for that, others think its cool and a conversation starter.

Agreed. Some may carry them for luck or comfort. I used to carry an Eisenhower dollar (surprise, surprise) for comfort when I was in school. Pull it out, instant stress relief.

My apologies for not keeping up to date on my pocket piece. I didn't carry it for some time but came across it a week or so ago and started carrying it again.

As you can see, wear is pretty heavy on the vertical of Liberty, particularly along the leg. Surprisingly, many of the hairlines seen in the first month's photo are not as visible anymore. The eagle on the reverse is honestly the hardiest part of the coin, with minimal scratches and wear on it. The shield and ribbon seem to be marked, but I expect the eagle will remain quite proof-like for some time. Wear is most evident on the coin when I carry it during hard work.

This pocket piece may be taking a journey this weekend as I take my Advance Scuba Diver's course. I plan on tossing it in my BCD and bringing some 100 feet underwater.
