I just went through about 200 1944-S Wheat Cents and I found this toward the end. I looked at a lot of 1944-S mint marks, both MMS-005 and MMS-006, in a row and this one really stood out because it looks so different than those 2 styles of S MM's that were used that year. My original thought was that it was larger due to being smashed during circulation, but I am not so sure. I compared it to about 20 other cents with equivalent circulation damage (like the one in the comparison pictures below) and it just seems larger and different. I would appreciate any thoughts or insight, thanks!

I believe those are the MMS-005 straight serifs/serif style. The mint mark was punched and it made the overall shape fuller in appearance. The same punch created both of these. If there was a spread between the punches it would have been a RPM, but there is not spread/separation seen between the punches, so it is normal. The MMS-006 was the ball serif punched mint marks. Here is what the different styles were on the 1946 year. The first and the third are the same punches.
