Hoping you all can help identify a VAM in this 1898-P. It has interesting spikes in the cotton balls that I don't see listed. Any help is appreciated.

I want to think about the right-hand feature a bit more but off the top of my head both are normal features on Morgans. The left arrow points to a definite normal Morgan detail; the right one should be a leaf instead of a spike. The actual stem of the right boll - and the leaf - have taken a hit which has exposed fresh metal and created the appearance of a die gouge in the stem.

SsuperDdave, hopefully this picture explains where I was referring because I'm not sure my arrows really helped. The circles contain the area in question. I don't see these marks on other Morgans but I'll check again. Thanks for chiming in... Hopefully this helps.

Ah! My bad, didn't see what you were showing me.

Those are die scratches, miscellaneous little results from varying production steps unique to each die. They are the underlying key to all VAMming, the tiny features allowing us to tell one indistinguishable die from another and collate Proof dies with the Business Strikes which came later from them. They are not always recorded.
Rest in Peace

I went through the listings several times and I think it's a VAM 2C VLDS (the bottom full coin plates on that page). The reverse die crack from the D to the Eagle's right wing looks like a match and your coin certainly has an over polished obverse die as seen by the hair curl and designer initial.

SsuperDdave, no worries, the fault was with my arrows not really pointing to where they needed to point. I appreciate your input.

dave700x - I think you have it. I was able to find the thread-like impressions on the leaves on the obverse, they are faint but there. I didn't even notice the die crack on the reverse! I got hung up on the die scratches on the cotton balls and failed to notice the crack. Thank you!

I wish I had a dollar (Morgan of course) for every time I got hung up on a PUP that I thought would be the feature to identify a die. Glad to help out friend.

Sometimes when you focus your eyes so sharply on one detail, they get stuck there. Kind of like a cramp.

Agreed... I'll see if I can zero in on the thread-like impressions and die crack so everyone can see.. hopefully tonight.
