Hello, I will be travelling to SUI from Canada very soon. I have been acquiring a lot of Swiss coin, paying less than value, and plan to exchange these at one of the branches into banknotes to use during my trip.
My questions:
Do I need to have an account at the branch to exchange?
Is there a limit to exchange per day?
Will there be a coin counting machine at a branch or should I come with the coin sorted and counted in bags/rolls? Which does the bank use - bags or rolls?
If needed, is it possible to obtain or bags or coin roll wrappers from abroad?
Thank you/Merci

Hi darcyrmt

I haven't been there for a few years, but on most of my visits I've changed banknotes for coins (usually 10 and 20 rappen) at banks so that I can sort through them for additions to my collection.

The coins are supplied in paper rolls that are almost impossible to re-use once you've opened them. I never had problems re-exchanging loose coins for notes, although I never did more than 20 francs face value or so at once. Banks didn't seem to mind if you didn't have an account there. There are lots of change-giving machines in places like railway stations, but I never saw a coin-counting or coinstar machine, though they may exist.

I found many Swiss bank staff quite friendly and tolerant of coin-collecting. Once in Interlaken a guy showed me some silver 5-franc coins from 1932-69 that someone had just bought in, and let me sort through them for additions to my collection (at face value). Another gave me a little bag of 1-rappen coins free of charge - that was in about 2005 when these had practically vanished from circulation. I also scored quite a few commemorative 5F and 20F coins for face value by asking at banks.

It's also worth pointing out that there are lots of vending machines in Switzerland and these normally take all denominations - I once bought a fairly expensive train ticket entirely in 10- and 20-rappen coins!

Hi Rob, it should be you that I should exchange with! Lol. Lots of coins for you to sift through if you can give me notes! Haha.. 20 francs at a time is a fair amount - as my bag is a lot of 20 rappen coins, just 2 exchanges would do me good. Oh well, I was hoping to bundle them up to make it easy for a teller, but it doesn't sound like a problem if I dont. Thanks for your "2 rappen" on the topic ;)
