so, I set out on a mission to get good lighting and photos for my iphone... I have used a loupe + iphone to get excellent focus and details, but wanted something I could do hands off and get good lighting.

No luck, picture of setup and result... the hole makes the center of the image dark and focus isn't as good as with a loupe.

Yeah, light boxes never work well for coins. They work great for jewelry, bugs, and things you want to have light from all angles so you can see every nook and cranny and have no hotspots. Of course we don't want hotspots on coins either, but we want somewhat directional lighting to make the coin look like it does "in hand".

I don't get the fascination with lightboxes. You'll never hear me recommend one. You need to eliminate area lighting, not encourage it.

I dont know anything about lighting, but I knew I wanted to try to emulate light coming from my lens without actually building a light ring, its a step on the path :P

You don't need a "light rig." You need a couple of gooseneck lamps, Scotch Tape and Kleenex for diffusion.

Seriously.
